Zhang Qikai (styled Yi Fei) was born in Beijing. He graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the China Academy of Art, the Painting Department of the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, and the Multimedia Program at the Istituto Europeo di Design, Milan. He has been invited to participate in artist residencies and studio projects across Italy, France, Belgium, and other countries, cultivating a rich perspective shaped by cross-cultural experience.
Zhang’s artistic practice spans painting, installation, performance, and multimedia. Deeply rooted in the essence of Eastern traditional culture, his works adopt forms of Eastern aesthetics while responding to contemporary humanistic contexts. His art is marked by a unique tension between Eastern and Western cultural perspectives. With a minimalist yet profound approach, his work explores the relationships between natural and human spaces, aiming to articulate subtle moments that transcend language—awakening a spiritual resonance in the viewer.
His representative series includes Heavenly Forest, Balance Meter, Chess, 360 Degrees, Momentum, Square Platform, Equilibrium, Taking Wing and Wind-driven installation. Notably, his installation Heavenly Forest received the First Prize at the Biennale of Asian Art in Italy, and Zen Garden was honored with an Honorable Mention at the inaugural Prague Biennale.
